Distortion

Released in 2008, Distortion represents a significant stylistic pivot for The Magnetic Fields, moving away from the acoustic and synth-heavy minimalism of previous works toward a dense 'Wall of Sound' inspired by The Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy. Stephin Merritt famously imposed a constraint on the project: every song must be approximately three minutes long, and every track must feature heavy distortion. Despite the abrasive production, the songwriting remains rooted in Merritt's signature style: witty, genre-hopping, and deeply indebted to the Great American Songbook. Vocals are shared between Merritt and Shirley Simms, providing a tonal contrast to the monolithic instrumental backing. Critics noted the album as a successful experiment in noise-pop, praising its ability to maintain melodic integrity beneath layers of feedback. It stands as the first in a 'no-synth' trilogy of albums, followed by Realism and Love at the Bottom of the Sea.
