The Magnetic Fields

The Magnetic Fields, led by the prolific Stephin Merritt, occupy a unique space in the American indie canon as the bridge between Tin Pan Alley songwriting traditions and 90s lo-fi synth-pop. Formed in 1988, the project evolved from a studio-based synth act featuring Susan Anway's vocals into a multi-instrumental ensemble centered on Merritt's distinctive baritone and deadpan delivery.

Their magnum opus, 1999's '69 Love Songs', redefined the concept album for the indie era, utilizing a vast array of instruments from banjos to modular synths to pastiche dozens of musical genres. Merritt's work is characterized by a strict adherence to formalist songwriting constraints and a lyrical voice that balances extreme irony with genuine pathos. Critically, they are viewed as pioneers of 'chamber pop' and 'twee', though their frequent use of noise and distortion (notably on the album 'Distortion') prevents easy categorization. They have influenced a generation of literate indie-pop acts like Belle and Sebastian and The Decemberists, maintaining a cult status that bridges the gap between musical theater nerds and underground rock fans.
