Down to Business

Released in 1989 on Volt Records, Down to Business represents a transitional period for The Spinners following their departure from Atlantic. After the commercial disappointment of 1985's Lovin' Feelings, the group attempted to modernize their sound for the late-80s R&B landscape. The album is characterized by its heavy use of digital synthesizers, drum machines, and the polished production typical of the era, moving away from the Thom Bell-helmed orchestral arrangements that defined their 1970s success. Despite being a commercial 'flop' at the time, the album features standout vocal performances from John Edwards, whose soulful leads provide a necessary organic counterpoint to the synthetic backdrops. The single 'Heal Me' marked a brief return to the R&B charts, peaking at number 70.
