E=MC²

Released in 1979, E=MC² is historically significant as one of the first albums to be recorded entirely digitally, a feat proudly proclaimed on its cover. Giorgio Moroder, already a titan of the disco era through his work with Donna Summer, used this project to push the boundaries of what was possible with synthesizers and sequencing. The album moves away from the lush orchestral arrangements of early disco toward a leaner, more 'computational' sound. It features extensive use of the vocoder and the Moog modular synthesizer, creating a sonic palette that would become the foundation for Italo disco and the synth-pop movement of the early 1980s. Critics at the time were struck by its 'cold' precision, but retrospectively, it is viewed as a visionary work that predicted the rise of EDM.
