Released in 2016, East marks a pivotal geographic and creative shift for Justin Rutledge. Following the release of his 2014 Tragically Hip tribute album, Daredevil, Rutledge relocated from the urban center of Toronto to the rural Prince Edward County. This move, combined with the decision to record in Halifax, Nova Scotia with producer Daniel Ledwell, deeply informs the album's sonic identity. Moving away from the more traditional alt-country grit of his earlier work, East embraces a more atmospheric, 'chamber-Americana' sound.
