Evangelion

Released in 2009, Evangelion represents the pinnacle of Behemoth's transition from underground black metal to global metal icons. Following the success of 'The Apostasy', this album refined their 'blackened death' sound into something more cohesive and theatrically potent. Recorded at Radio Gdańsk in Poland and mixed by Colin Richardson, the production is a hallmark of the era, offering a 'wall of sound' that maintains individual instrument clarity. Thematically, the album is a sophisticated subversion of Christian iconography, specifically the Book of Revelation, as evidenced by the cover art of the Whore of Babylon. Musically, it is notable for the drumming of Inferno, whose speed and precision are legendary in the genre, and Nergal's authoritative vocal delivery. The closing track, 'Lucifer', based on a poem by Tadeusz Miciński, marked a significant stylistic expansion into slower, more atmospheric territory that would inform their later work like 'The Satanist'.
