Exmilitary

Exmilitary is the debut mixtape from the Sacramento-based trio Death Grips, and it remains one of the most influential documents of 2010s experimental music. Released for free in 2011, it immediately set the group apart through its radical use of sampling, pulling from Link Wray, Pink Floyd, and Black Flag to create a sound that bridged the gap between hardcore punk and industrial hip-hop. Unlike their later, more synth-focused work like 'The Money Store', Exmilitary is defined by its 'rock' DNA and its heavy, analog-leaning distortion. The project gained massive internet notoriety, particularly for the track 'Guillotine', which became a viral touchstone for the group's confrontational aesthetic. Due to its extensive use of uncleared samples, the album has largely been scrubbed from official streaming platforms, cementing its status as a cult artifact that must be sought out through third-party downloads or physical bootlegs. It established MC Ride as one of the most distinctive vocalists in the genre and Zach Hill as a producer capable of translating his frantic drumming style into digital soundscapes.
