The Powers That B

Released as a double album in 2015, The Powers That B represents the most ambitious structural work in the Death Grips catalog. The project is famously split into two distinct sonic identities. Disc one, 'Niggas on the Moon', was a surprise digital release featuring Icelandic singer Björk as a 'found object' instrument, with her vocals mapped to Zach Hill’s electronic drum pads. This disc is characterized by its lack of traditional melody and its reliance on rhythmic complexity. Disc two, 'Jenny Death', was released months later following a period of rumored disbandment. It features a significant shift toward noise rock and punk, utilizing live instrumentation from Nick Reinhart. The album's penultimate track, 'On GP', is widely cited as the group's most vulnerable and lyrically direct moment, addressing themes of suicide and exhaustion. Critically, it is viewed as a high-water mark for the industrial hip-hop subgenre, merging high-concept avant-garde techniques with visceral, raw energy.
