Extra Temporary

Released in early 2010 as a digital-exclusive collection, Extra Temporary serves as a companion piece to Simian Mobile Disco's second studio album, Temporary Pleasure. While the parent album was defined by its high-profile collaborations with vocalists like Beth Ditto and Gruff Rhys, this EP strips away the pop artifice to reveal the duo's roots in minimal techno and tech house. The six tracks included here were largely rare or previously unreleased instrumentals recorded during the same sessions, showcasing James Ford and Jas Shaw's mastery of modular synthesis. Tracks like 'Babaghanoush' and 'Flea In Your Ear' demonstrate a focus on long-form, hypnotic progression that aligns more closely with the Berlin school of techno than the 'New Rave' scene they were often associated with. Critically, it is viewed as a bridge between their early indie-dance crossover sound and the more experimental, hardware-only direction they would later pursue on albums like Whorl.
