Facing the Animal

Facing the Animal, released in 1997, is often cited by fans as one of Yngwie Malmsteen's most cohesive and powerful studio efforts. A significant factor in its success was the recruitment of legendary drummer Cozy Powell (Rainbow, Black Sabbath), whose powerful, 'heavy-handed' style gave the tracks a rhythmic weight often missing from Malmsteen's more speed-oriented releases. This was one of Powell's final recordings before his untimely death in 1998. The album also features vocalist Mats Leven, whose gritty yet melodic delivery perfectly complemented the album's shift toward a more hard-rock-influenced sound. While Malmsteen's signature neoclassical shredding remains the centerpiece - highlighted by the Vivaldi-inspired 'Air on a Theme' - the songwriting on tracks like 'Braveheart' and the title track shows a greater emphasis on groove and structure. Critically, it was seen as a return to form, moving away from the thinner production of the early 90s into a richer, more modern sonic landscape.
