Metal Magic

Released in 1983 on the band's own independent label, Metal Magic Records, this debut is a stark departure from the Pantera most listeners know from the 1990s. Produced by Jerry Abbott (father of Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell), the album features Terry Glaze on vocals, whose style is rooted in the high-pitched, melodic delivery of early 80s heavy metal. The record is historically significant as the first document of Darrell's guitar prowess, though his tone here is much thinner and more traditional than his later signature sound. Critical reception has historically been dismissive, with AllMusic noting it as a 'derivative' but 'competent' example of early glam metal.
