Festivals of Atonement

Released in 1995, Festivals of Atonement is the debut EP from South Carolina's Nile, representing a critical bridge between early 90s death metal and the technical, thematic style they would later pioneer. Unlike their later work, which is characterized by blistering tempos and high-fidelity production, this release is notable for its slower, more deliberate pacing and raw, murky sound. The lineup features the core trio of Karl Sanders, Chief Spires, and Pete Hammoura, showcasing a band experimenting with non-Western scales and ritualistic structures. Tracks like 'Extinct' and 'Wrought' demonstrate a willingness to embrace long-form compositions and doom-metal dynamics.
