Filth Pig

Released in 1996, Filth Pig represents one of the most drastic stylistic pivots in industrial music history. Following the massive success of Psalm 69, Al Jourgensen intentionally moved away from the 'speed-freak' industrial thrash that had become the band's trademark. Recorded during a period of heavy substance abuse and legal troubles, the album reflects a 'gun-in-mouth' mentality, eschewing digital samples for a raw, analog approach. The record is heavily influenced by the burgeoning sludge and doom metal scenes, featuring slow tempos and a prominent role for Mike Scaccia's heavy, blues-inflected guitar work. While it reached #19 on the Billboard 200, it alienated fans expecting a sequel to their previous hits. Over time, it has been re-evaluated as a brave, if harrowing, document of personal collapse and a precursor to the more experimental, atmospheric side of industrial metal. It remains the band's most divisive and emotionally raw statement.
