Gallipoli

Released in 2019, Gallipoli marks a significant return to the experimental, world-folk roots of Zach Condon's project Beirut. Recorded primarily in Puglia, Italy, the album is named after the town where Condon wrote the title track. Sonically, the record is defined by the use of a Farfisa organ and a variety of brass instruments, processed through vintage amplifiers to achieve a specific 'broken' analog warmth. Critics from Pitchfork and AllMusic noted that while it retains Condon's signature Balkan-influenced brass and crooning vocals, it leans more heavily into instrumental textures and lo-fi aesthetics than its predecessor, 'No No No'. The album serves as a bridge between the bedroom-pop origins of 'Gulag Orkestar' and a more mature, atmospheric approach to songwriting. It is less concerned with traditional pop structures and more focused on the evocative power of specific timbres and locations.
