Gardens of Grief

Gardens of Grief is the seminal 1991 debut EP from At the Gates, recorded at the legendary Sunlight Studio under the guidance of Tomas Skogsberg. While the band would later become the primary architects of the polished 'Gothenburg Sound' with 1995's Slaughter of the Soul, this early release showcases a much more primitive, dissonant, and progressive form of death metal. The production is famously murky, a result of a four-day recording window and the band's relative inexperience, yet this lack of polish contributes to its unique, cavernous atmosphere. Lyrically, the EP is steeped in existential dread and grief, with the track 'At the Gates' dedicated to Per Yngve 'Dead' Ohlin of Mayhem. Musically, it is characterized by Alf Svensson's unconventional, often atonal guitar leads and Tomas Lindberg's high-pitched, desperate vocal delivery. It remains a cult favorite for its raw emotional weight and its refusal to follow standard death metal tropes of the era.
