Givin’ It Back

Released in 1971 on their own T-Neck label, Givin' It Back represents a significant turning point for The Isley Brothers. After years of being interpreted by others, the brothers decided to 'give back' by interpreting the songs of the white rock and folk artists who had been influenced by R&B. The album is notable for being the first to fully integrate the 'younger' brothers (Ernie, Marvin, and Chris Jasper) into the core creative unit, a move that introduced the psychedelic guitar and sophisticated keyboard textures that would lead to '3+3'. The centerpiece is the 'Ohio/Machine Gun' medley, which connects the Kent State shootings with the Vietnam War, creating a powerful protest statement. Critically, it is viewed as the bridge between their early vocal-group style and their later status as a self-contained funk-rock powerhouse. It remains a landmark of the 'Black Rock' movement.
