The Isley Brothers

The Isley Brothers represent one of the longest-running and most influential lineages in American music, spanning over seven decades. Formed as a gospel trio in 1954, they successfully navigated every major shift in Black music, from doo-wop and Motown soul to funk, disco, and contemporary R&B.

Their 1973 transition from a vocal group to a self-contained six-piece band (the '3+3' era) was a pivotal moment, introducing Ernie Isley’s distinctive fuzz-tone guitar work which bridged the gap between R&B and psychedelic rock. This era solidified their status as innovators who controlled their own business interests via T-Neck Records. Critically, they are recognized for their immense impact on hip-hop via sampling; their catalog is among the most raided in history, with 'Between the Sheets' and 'Footsteps in the Dark' providing the DNA for West Coast G-Funk and beyond. Their career arc is a rare example of sustained commercial relevance across multiple generations, maintaining chart presence from the Eisenhower era into the 21st century.
