Good Humor

Released in 1998, Good Humor represents a pivotal shift in Saint Etienne's discography. Seeking to escape the 'quintessentially English' and 'indie dance' labels that had defined their early career, the trio traveled to Malmö, Sweden, to record with producer Tore Johansson at Tambourine Studios. Johansson, famous for his work with The Cardigans, brought a signature Scandi-pop clarity and an emphasis on live instrumentation that fundamentally altered the band's sonic profile. Moving away from the sample-heavy, synth-driven approach of Tiger Bay, the band embraced a full-band sound featuring prominent horn sections, live drums, and acoustic guitars. Despite the title's American spelling and the Swedish recording location, the album's heart remains rooted in sophisticated songwriting. It was recorded in a brisk two-week session, lending the tracks a cohesive, energetic feel. Critically, it is often cited as one of their most consistent works, successfully bridging the gap between their experimental origins and a more traditional, melody-focused pop sensibility.
