Graceland

Released in 1986, Graceland represents a pivotal moment in both Paul Simon's career and the history of global pop. Following the commercial failure of Hearts and Bones, Simon became obsessed with a cassette of South African township music, leading him to Johannesburg to record with local musicians despite the UN cultural boycott of the apartheid regime. This context remains a point of historical debate, yet the resulting music redefined 'world music' for a Western audience. The album is characterized by its integration of Mbaqanga, Zydeco, and Los Lobos's Chicano rock into Simon's established singer-songwriter framework.
