Gypsyhook EP

Released in 2009, Gypsyhook EP represents the pivotal transition of Sonny Moore from the frontman of From First to Last to the electronic powerhouse known as Skrillex. While it is technically his debut solo release under his own name, it contains the DNA of the 'Skrillex' project, particularly in its use of hyper-edited vocal samples and aggressive synth textures. The EP is heavily influenced by the 'blog-house' and electro-house movements of the era, featuring collaborations and remixes from artists like The Toxic Avenger and Dan Sena. Sonically, it is much lighter and more pop-oriented than his later work, retaining a strong melodic sensibility and conventional song structures that still feel rooted in his background as a singer-songwriter. The final track, a Japanese version of Mora, highlights his interest in international aesthetics and experimental vocal processing. Critically, it is viewed as a fascinating historical artifact that documents the birth of a new era in electronic music.
