HEIR

Released in 2014 as a limited 7-inch and digital EP, HEIR represents a transitional and experimental moment for the Austin-based ensemble Balmorhea. The project is structured as a study in contrast, featuring two original compositions (HEIR I and HEIR II) and three remixes. Sonically, the original tracks lean heavily into the group's neoclassical and minimalist tendencies, stripping away the fuller post-rock arrangements of their earlier work in favor of a stark, piano-led intimacy. The recording quality is dry and close-mic'd, emphasizing the physical mechanics of the instruments. The inclusion of remixes by Matthewdavid, Orcas (Rafael Anton Irisarri and Benoit Pioulard), and Ben Aqua marks a significant departure, introducing elements of IDM, ambient techno, and glitch. This juxtaposition allows the EP to function as both a traditional neoclassical release and a modern ambient-electronic hybrid, showcasing the versatility of Balmorhea's melodic language when placed in different production contexts.
