Tour EP

Released in October 2008, the Tour EP serves as a pivotal transitional document for the Austin-based ensemble Balmorhea. Following the release of their breakthrough album Rivers Arms, this EP showcases the band expanding their duo-centric sound into a fuller, more rhythmic quintet. The first three tracks are 'revised' versions of previously released material, notably incorporating double bass and drums. These additions provide a jazz-inflected grounding to their pastoral post-rock, moving away from pure minimalism toward a richer chamber-folk aesthetic. The latter half of the EP features live recordings that highlight the band's ability to maintain an atmosphere of intense intimacy in a performance setting. The track 'We Will Rebuild With Smooth Stones' was recorded at San Solomon Springs, a location central to the band's mythology, adding a layer of environmental authenticity to the release. Critically, it is viewed as the bridge to their more expansive later work, proving that their quietist approach could scale into larger arrangements without sacrificing its core emotional vulnerability.
