Hliðskjálf

Released in 1999, Hliðskjálf is the second of two ambient albums recorded by Varg Vikernes while serving a 21-year sentence in Norway. Due to prison restrictions, he was denied access to guitars or drums, forcing a total reliance on a synthesizer and a four-track recorder. This technical limitation birthed the 'dungeon synth' aesthetic: primitive, MIDI-based compositions that evoke medieval atmospheres. While its predecessor, Dauði Baldrs, was criticized for its 'toy-like' sounds, Hliðskjálf is widely considered a more mature and atmospheric work. The album follows a loose narrative based on the death of the god Balder and the mourning of his mother, Frigg. Its legacy is significant within the black metal community as a successful pivot into pure ambient music, proving that the 'Burzum' atmosphere was a product of composition rather than just distorted production.
