Human Racing

Human Racing, released in February 1984, serves as the definitive introduction to Nik Kershaw's brand of 'sophisti-pop' and synth-driven new wave. Produced by Peter Collins, the album is a masterclass in mid-80s digital production, characterized by the heavy use of the Yamaha DX7 and PPG Wave synthesizers, which provide its signature crystalline texture. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Kershaw performed much of the instrumentation himself, showcasing a level of technical proficiency - particularly in his guitar work and complex chord voicings - that elevated the album above standard teen-idol pop. The record was a massive commercial success in the UK, spawning four Top 20 hits and cementing Kershaw's status as a leading figure in the second British Invasion. Despite a famously harsh 1/10 review from Smash Hits at the time, the album has been retrospectively praised for its melodic density and lyrical depth, particularly on tracks like 'Wouldn't It Be Good' and the politically charged 'I Won't Let the Sun Go Down on Me.'
