Released in 2020, I solnedgången (In the Sunset) represents the most significant stylistic departure in Mando Diao's two-decade history. While the band had previously experimented with synth-pop on Aelita, this album looks backward to the Swedish folk tradition and the poetry of Karin Boye and Gustaf Fröding. Recorded primarily in Swedish, the album strips away the electric guitars and drum kits in favor of acoustic arrangements and chamber-folk flourishes. The inclusion of several demo tracks alongside polished studio versions emphasizes a 'process-over-product' mentality, highlighting the raw songwriting.
