Northwest Passage

Released in 2012 as a companion piece to 'Break It Yourself', the Northwest Passage EP represents Andrew Bird at his most rustic and unadorned. While his studio albums often feature dense, multi-instrumental arrangements, this collection focuses on the core elements of his sound: violin, guitar, and voice. The EP includes a notable collaboration with St. Vincent on 'Lusitania', though the version here maintains the EP's overall acoustic aesthetic. The centerpiece is the six-minute 'Carrion Suite', an instrumental that showcases Bird's ability to build complex emotional narratives through violin looping and pizzicato techniques. Critically, it is seen as a bridge between his more experimental 'Bowl of Fire' days and his later, more refined folk explorations. It serves as a masterclass in minimalist production, emphasizing the natural acoustics of the recording space and the physical relationship between the musician and his instruments.
