Illuminations

Released in 1974, Illuminations represents the peak of Carlos Santana's spiritual period under the tutelage of Sri Chinmoy. This collaboration with Alice Coltrane is a significant pivot from his Latin-rock roots toward the 'spiritual jazz' pioneered by Coltrane and her late husband, John. The album features an elite jazz lineup including Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette, but the core identity is defined by the interplay between Santana's sustained electric guitar and Coltrane's harp and Wurlitzer organ.
