Released in 1971, Mwandishi marks the definitive beginning of Herbie Hancock's experimental 'Mwandishi' era, named after the Swahili moniker he adopted. Moving away from the soul-jazz of 'Fat Albert Rotunda,' this album leans heavily into the electric, modal explorations pioneered by Miles Davis on 'In a Silent Way' and 'Bitches Brew,' but with a more structured, compositional approach to tension and release. The sextet - featuring Bennie Maupin, Eddie Henderson, Julian Priester, Buster Williams, and Billy Hart - operates as a single organism, blending acoustic instruments with early electronic processing.
