In the Attic of the Universe is the second full-length release by The Antlers, predating the band's breakthrough 'Hospice.' At this stage, The Antlers was still primarily the solo project of Peter Silberman, and the record reflects that singular, insular focus. Recorded between late 2006 and early 2007 during a period of personal isolation for Silberman, the album is a conceptual exploration of the cosmos as a source of both terror and solace. Sonically, it sits at the intersection of lo-fi indie folk and ambient slowcore, utilizing heavy reverb and found-sound textures to create a 'bedroom-cosmic' aesthetic. While 'Hospice' would later bring the project critical acclaim for its narrative tragedy, this album is more abstract and philosophical, focusing on the relationship between the individual and the infinite. It remains a cult favorite for its raw, unpolished beauty and its unique thematic marriage of domestic intimacy and astronomical scale.
