Jesu / Eluvium

Released in 2007, this split EP (often categorized as a Jesu release featuring Eluvium) represents a peak in Justin Broadrick's exploration of 'pop' sensibilities within the framework of extreme metal. Following the dissolution of Godflesh, Broadrick used Jesu to pivot toward a more melodic, shoegaze-influenced sound. This specific release is notable for its collaboration with ambient artist Eluvium, which pushes the Jesu sound further into textural, atmospheric territory. The centerpiece is the nearly 20-minute closing track, which serves as a bridge between the crushing post-metal of the EP's first half and the pure ambient minimalism of Eluvium's contribution. It captures a specific era of the Hydra Head Records roster where the boundaries between metal, indie, and electronic music were being aggressively dismantled.
