Released in 1987, Keeper of the Seven Keys, Part I is widely cited as the album that birthed the European Power Metal style. Following the departure of Kai Hansen from vocal duties, the band recruited 18-year-old Michael Kiske, whose clean, operatic delivery transformed their sound from aggressive speed metal into something more melodic and expansive. The album is characterized by its 'happy' major-key melodies, a significant departure from the darker tones of contemporary thrash and NWOBHM.
