Lemuria

Released simultaneously with Sirius B, Lemuria represents the peak of Therion's mid-career creative explosion. Recorded with over 170 musicians, including the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and a massive professional choir, the album solidified Christofer Johnsson's transition from death metal pioneer to symphonic architect. The album is notable for its exploration of the 'Uthark' runic system and various global mythologies, moving away from purely Western occultism. Sonically, it is more direct and riff-heavy than its counterpart Sirius B, featuring more prominent lead guitar work and occasional 'harsh' vocals that nod to the band's roots. Critics often highlight the track 'Lemuria' for its beautiful use of flute and acoustic textures, which provide a necessary breather within the album's otherwise dense, wagnerian wall of sound.
