Released in 2011, Liarbird represents a pivotal moment in Ola Kvernberg's career, transitioning him from a respected violinist to a visionary composer of large-scale works. Originally a commissioned piece for the Trondheim Jazz Festival, the album features a 'supergroup' of Norwegian jazz talent, including Mathias Eick and Håkon Kornstad. The record is defined by its unique instrumentation, most notably the use of two drummers (Erik Nylander and Torstein Lofthus) and two bassists, which allows for a dense, polyrhythmic foundation.
