Released in late 2007, Lives serves as a vital live companion to Battles' landmark debut LP, Mirrored. While the band had already established themselves as masters of studio precision, this EP proved their intricate, loop-based compositions were fully executable in a high-energy live environment. The recording highlights the interplay between Tyondai Braxton's glitched, alien vocal treatments and the ferocious, metronomic drumming of John Stanier. The live version of 'Atlas' included here is particularly noteworthy, stretching the studio original into a nearly ten-minute epic of tribal rhythms and escalating tension.
