Loudness

Loudness (1992), often referred to as the 'Self-Titled' or 'Masaki Yamada era' debut, marks a significant departure from the band's 1980s power metal roots. Following the departure of American vocalist Mike Vescera, the band recruited Masaki Yamada (formerly of EZO) and bassist Taiji Sawada (formerly of X Japan). This lineup change resulted in a much heavier, groove-oriented sound influenced by the burgeoning Pantera-led movement in the West. Akira Takasaki's guitar work on this album is notably more aggressive, utilizing lower tunings and a more percussive attack. Recorded with producer Jody Gray, the album peaked at #2 on the Oricon charts in Japan, proving that their fan base was ready for a more 'extreme' version of the band. It remains a cult favorite for its uncompromising intensity and its role in bridging the gap between traditional heavy metal and the more modern, aggressive styles of the 1990s.
