Released in 1992, Vulgar Display of Power is Pantera's second major-label outing and the definitive statement of the groove metal subgenre. Following the success of Cowboys from Hell, the band moved further away from their glam roots toward a heavier, more syncopated sound influenced by Exhorder and Metallica. Produced by Terry Date, the album features a signature 'scooped' guitar tone and a dry, punchy drum sound that became the industry standard for 90s metal. It peaked at number 44 on the Billboard 200 and eventually reached double platinum status.
