Machine Messiah

Released in 2017, Machine Messiah represents a creative peak for the Derrick Green-era of Sepultura. Produced by Jens Bogren in Sweden, the album is a concept piece centered on the 'robotization' of society and the loss of human identity to technology. Sonically, it is a significant departure from the raw, hardcore-influenced sound of its predecessor, 2013's The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart. This record leans heavily into progressive metal and neoclassical elements, most notably on the instrumental track 'Iceberg Dances'. It also features some of the most technical drumming in the band's history courtesy of Eloy Casagrande. Critical reception was overwhelmingly positive, with many citing it as the band's strongest work since the 1990s, praising its ambition, varied pacing, and the successful integration of orchestral elements without losing the band's signature groove.
