Manala

Released in 2012, Manala is Korpiklaani's eighth studio album and serves as a conceptual exploration of the Finnish underworld (Manala or Tuonela). This record marked a pivotal moment for the band, as they moved away from the purely celebratory drinking songs of their mid-2000s era toward a more sophisticated, narrative-driven approach. The album was uniquely released as a double-disc set in many territories, featuring the full tracklist in both Finnish and English, though the Finnish versions are widely considered the definitive experience due to the natural cadence of the language fitting the humppa rhythms. Musically, it retains the band's signature high-energy polka-metal fusion but introduces darker, more atmospheric textures on tracks like 'Synkkä'. The addition of violinist Tuomas Rounakari brought a more authentic, shamanic fiddle style to the arrangements, which is particularly evident in the album's more contemplative moments.
