Tuatha na Gael

Released in 1995, Tuatha na Gael is the debut studio album by Cruachan and is widely cited as the record that codified the Celtic metal subgenre. While Skyclad had previously experimented with folk-metal fusions, Cruachan was the first to integrate the harshness of second-wave black metal with authentic Irish traditional music. The album features a heavy emphasis on Irish mythology, specifically the cycles of the Tuatha Dé Danann and the Ulster Cycle, with tracks like 'The First Battle of Moytura' and 'Cúchulainn' serving as long-form narrative epics. Sonically, the album is defined by its lo-fi production and the prominent use of the tin whistle, which provides the primary melodic hooks. Despite its rough edges, the album received significant underground acclaim for its originality and was later reissued by Hammerheart Records in 2001, cementing its status as a cult classic in the extreme metal canon.
