Omega serves as the eighth studio album by Epica and represents a culmination of their 'cinematic' era. After a five-year hiatus following The Holographic Principle, the band returned with a renewed focus on organic sounds, recording with a live orchestra and multiple choirs (including a children's choir for the first time). The album is structurally anchored by the third installment of their 'Kingdom of Heaven' series, a sprawling 13-minute progressive epic that showcases the band's technical proficiency. Sonically, it integrates more diverse world music influences, particularly in tracks like 'Code of Life' which utilizes oriental scales and instruments. Critics noted that while it follows the established Epica blueprint, the songwriting is more refined and the emotional stakes feel higher, particularly on the ballad 'Rivers'. It stands as one of the most expensive and polished productions in the history of the symphonic metal genre.
