Mid Spiral: Order

Mid Spiral: Order is the first installment of the Mid Spiral EP series, later compiled into a full-length project. Recorded during intense week-long sessions at Valentine Recording Studios in Los Angeles, the album marks a significant evolution for BADBADNOTGOOD. Moving beyond their reputation as hip-hop's favorite jazz ensemble, the trio (joined by touring members) leans heavily into 1970s jazz-funk, Brazilian rhythms, and psychedelic soul. The tracks were recorded directly to tape, preserving a raw, dynamic energy that highlights the group's telepathic improvisational skills. Critically, the EP was praised for its sophisticated arrangements and the seamless integration of world music influences, particularly the bossa nova and samba undercurrents found in tracks like Sétima Regra. It represents a more mature, compositionally focused era for the band, prioritizing atmosphere and texture over the aggressive rhythmic punch of their earlier work.
