Minus the Herd

Minus the Herd is the third studio album by Montreal-based Ion Dissonance, marking a significant stylistic shift from their previous efforts, Breathing is Irrelevant and Solace. Released in 2007, the album saw the band moving away from the hyper-fast, grindcore-influenced mathcore of their debut toward a slower, more groove-oriented sound influenced by Meshuggah and the emerging 'djent' aesthetic. This transition was marked by the adoption of seven and eight-string guitars, resulting in a much thicker, more oppressive sonic profile. The production is notably cleaner and more 'digital' than their earlier work, emphasizing the surgical precision of the performances. While some long-time fans were initially alienated by the decrease in tempo, the album is now regarded as a pivotal release that helped bridge the gap between technical death metal and the modern progressive metalcore movement. It remains one of the heaviest entries in the Abacus Recordings catalog.
