Mournument

Released in 2002 via My Kingdom Music, Mournument represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of Deinonychus, the project led by multi-instrumentalist Marco Kehren. Recorded in Germany, the album refined the 'suicidal' black metal sound of the band's earlier years into a more sophisticated, doom-oriented architecture. It is characterized by its extreme use of tempo deceleration and Kehren's signature vocal style, which eschews traditional metal growls for a more theatrical, pained series of shrieks and gasps. The inclusion of prominent, darkwave-influenced keyboard textures adds a layer of gothic grandeur that distinguishes it from the more lo-fi depressive black metal of the era. Critically, it is often cited as one of the most successful fusions of the Dutch and Italian doom sensibilities, blending cold atmosphere with a certain operatic tragedy.
