My Arms, Your Hearse (1998) represents a pivotal evolution for Opeth, marking their first concept album and a significant tightening of their songwriting. Following the sprawling Morningrise, Mikael Åkerfeldt moved toward shorter, more cohesive structures, with no track exceeding ten minutes. This was the first recording to feature long-time drummer Martin Lopez, though Åkerfeldt handled bass duties himself as Martin Méndez joined too late to learn the parts. Sonically, the album shifted away from the 'thin' black metal production of their debut toward a richer, more mid-heavy analog sound, influenced by Åkerfeldt's growing obsession with 70s progressive rock.
