Nattens Madrigal (1997) serves as the final chapter in Ulver's 'Trilogy,' following the black metal/folk hybrid Bergtatt and the purely acoustic Kveldssanger. It is a conceptual masterpiece centered on the myth of the werewolf, specifically a man's spiritual and physical surrender to the beast. Sonically, the album is defined by its extreme lo-fi production, which was rumored to have been recorded in a forest (a claim later debunked by the band). The mix is notoriously devoid of low-end frequencies, resulting in a 'thin' sound that emphasizes the melodic complexity of the guitar work. While some critics at the time dismissed it as unlistenable or a Darkthrone imitation, it has since been recognized as one of the most creative and influential black metal albums of the 1990s. It marks the last time the band would utilize a traditional metal framework before their radical shift into industrial and trip-hop on Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell.
