O samba poconé

Released in July 1996, O Samba Poconé represents the commercial and creative peak of Skank's early career. Moving away from the stricter dancehall influences of their previous work, Calango, the band collaborated with producer Dudu Marote to craft a more diverse sonic palette. The album famously incorporates elements of rockabilly, Latin rock, and even traditional Brazilian forró, all filtered through a polished pop-rock lens. It sold over a million copies in Brazil, fueled by the massive success of singles like 'Garota Nacional' and 'É uma partida de futebol.' The latter became an unofficial anthem for football culture, solidifying the band's place in the Brazilian national identity. The album's success extended beyond Brazil, particularly in Spanish-speaking markets and Europe, marking one of the most successful international crossovers for a Brazilian rock band in the 1990s. Its 20th-anniversary reissue in 2016 highlighted its enduring influence and the depth of its songwriting through previously unreleased demos and rehearsals.
