Octavarium

Octavarium is Dream Theater's eighth studio album and stands as one of their most conceptually ambitious works. Recorded at the legendary Hit Factory in NYC just before its closure, the album is structured around the concept of the octave, with each of the eight tracks written in a different ascending minor key (F to F). This mathematical rigidity is balanced by a diverse songwriting approach that includes some of their most accessible work ('I Walk Beside You') alongside the technical 'Panic Attack' and the sprawling 24-minute title track. The latter is a tribute to the band's progressive rock influences, featuring overt nods to Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Yes. It also continues Mike Portnoy's 'Twelve-step Suite' with 'The Root of All Evil.' Critically, it is often cited as the peak of the band's mid-career period, successfully synthesizing their heavy and melodic halves into a cohesive, cinematic whole.
