One Quiet Night

One Quiet Night represents a significant stylistic pivot for Pat Metheny, moving away from the complex arrangements of the Pat Metheny Group toward a radical solo minimalism. Recorded at his home studio in late 2001 and released in 2003, the album was largely an accident; Metheny was testing a new baritone guitar built by Linda Manzer and found himself capturing these sketches in the middle of the night. The tuning is unique, featuring the middle two strings tuned up an octave, which provides a piano-like depth and a harp-like shimmer. While Metheny is a titan of jazz fusion, this record leans heavily into Americana and folk-pop sensibilities, featuring covers of Norah Jones and Gerry & the Pacemakers. Critics, including those at the BBC, praised the album for its vulnerability and the way it showcased Metheny's melodic genius without the safety net of a band.
