Rust Colored Stones

Released in 2003, Rust Colored Stones is the debut studio album by Gregory Alan Isakov. While later albums like The Weatherman would define his 'cinematic folk' sound with orchestral flourishes and deep reverb, this record is a masterclass in minimalism. Recorded shortly after Isakov moved to Colorado, the songs are deeply influenced by the geography of the high plains and the isolation of the mountain west. The tracks are primarily solo acoustic affairs, occasionally augmented by subtle banjo or piano. Critical reception, though limited at the time of release, has grown retrospectively as fans of his later work discovered the raw emotional honesty of these early recordings.
