Orchestrion

Released in 2010, Orchestrion represents one of the most ambitious 'solo' projects in jazz history. Pat Metheny moved away from his traditional group settings to collaborate with a massive array of custom-built, solenoid-triggered acoustic instruments. These 'orchestrionics' - including pianos, mallet instruments, and percussion - were controlled via Metheny's guitar and computer triggers, allowing him to act as composer, conductor, and soloist simultaneously. The project was inspired by his childhood fascination with his grandfather's player piano but pushed into the realm of modern robotics. Sonically, the album sits between jazz fusion and contemporary minimalism, characterized by dense polyrhythms and Metheny's signature lyrical guitar lines. It was recorded in a way that captures the physical space of the instruments, emphasizing the 'acoustic' nature of the mechanical sounds.
